Newcastle Set To Sign Defensive Duo?

According to several reports of late, it has been reported that Newcastle United want to sign both Brazilian centre back Douglas and French right back Mathieu Debuchy to bolster their defensive options. Newcastle had made an official bid for Douglas earlier on in the week believed to be in the region of £3 million pounds. The premier league club are waiting to hear back from FC Twente regarding this offer. They have also made contact with Lille regarding the potential transfer of Mathieu Debuchy to Newcastle and a bid was made several weeks back. Although, Lille rejected this offer instantaneously due to the size of the fee and the clubs unwillingness to sell the player on before finding an adequate replacement first.

Douglas, who plays for Dutch side FC Twente has made 105 appearances for the club, while scoring 9 goals in the process. Douglas has never played for the Brazil national team, he had also stated that it what unrealistic to think he would play for the Brazilian national side due to the high level of competition for places. The 24-year-old has openly shared his desire to play in the Dutch national side, after been declared eligible to play in the Oranje national side. Newcastle need reliable defenders and greater squad depth, especially with players like Danny Simpson seeking pastures new this summer. However, Newcastle will face strong competition from West Ham for the Brazilian and may be involved in a bidding way in order to capture the players services. If Newcastle’s initial bid fails they are expected to return with a great offer. During his time at FC Twente Douglas has won the Eredivisie once and the Dutch Super Cup twice. Douglas has also scored the most goals out of all of FC Twente’s defenders with a goals tally of 5 this season. In addition to this, Douglas had also racked up four assists and was named Twente’s most disciplined defender with only 2 yellow cards and 1 red card for the entire domestic season.

Mathieu Debuchy plays for French club Lille. The 26-year-old is an attacking right back and his impressive performances over the past few seasons have the caught the eye of many interested suitors. He was one of the standout performers for France at Euro 2012 and he desperately seeking a move away from the French club in order to take the next step up in his career. Moreover, Debuchy has been at Lille since 2003 and during that time has made 218 appearance, whilst netting 15 goals in the process. He has an attacking minded approach to defending, this may be down to him starting his career as a midfielder. Unlike Douglas, the French defender has only won one league title and one Coupe De France in his 9 years spell with the club. His discipline record last season was poor in comparison with Douglas’s with 10 yellow cards and a red card dished out to the right back, last season. However, the 26-year-old did net 5 goals and got one assist in for French outfit Lille.

How Much Could These Defenders Cost Newcastle?

Well, Douglas could command a bargain fee from £3 million pounds upwards, whereas, Debuchy will set Newcastle back between £7- 10 million pounds. Both players are of considerable talent and would represent a major coup for Newcastle United. Debuchy recently declared how it is his main intention to join former Lille team-mate Cabaye at Newcastle. Signing both of these players are well within Newcastle’s reach and offer the premier league club value for money. Although, the likes of Chelsea and Inter Milan are also hot on the defenders trail.

With Newcastle looking to build on their successful campaign last season, having finished in an impressive 5th place in the league strengthening their current squad with players of this calibre is a must. It will be interesting to see what players Newcastle can attract this summer as they search for Champions League football once more next year.
