Following an immensely disappointing season Inter Milan have decided to make wholesale changes this summer in order to avoid the possibility of another unsuccessful season. Several of the clubs old guard have either already been sold, released or are expected to move on in the very near future. Experienced international stars Diego Forlan and Lucio have already departed the San Siro club and Julio Cesar is expected to follow suit. A mass exodus is anticipated at the club, with change deemed necessary for the clubs future. The Brazilian goalkeeper has been at the club for seven seasons becoming one of the world’s finest goalkeepers during his time at Inter Milan. However, the Brazilian is not the goalkeeping force he was once between the sticks. Despite this, he is still a decent goalkeeper with a wealth of experience under his belt and a move away from the San Siro club may just be exactly what he needs to kick-start his professional career again.
Who Is Interested In Julio Cesar And Why?
Well, during his seven seasons at Inter Milan, Julio Cesar has made over 290 appearances showing his worth as No. 1 for both the Brazilian national team and Inter Milan throughout. At 32 years of age he is considering his options especially after the club recently signed Samir Handanovic from Udinese, a player too good to sit on the bench as a second choice keeper. Samir Handanovic is a few years younger than Julio Cesar and he has shown his quality at Udinese over the last three seasons, with consistently good performances. The likes of Roma and Tottenham are said to be interested in Julio Cesar with Roma looking to sell Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenberg. Moreover, Stekelenberg is a player also reportedly on Tottenham’s goalkeeper shortlist with new Tottenham boss Andres Villas Boas determined to sign a long-term goalkeeper. At 41 years of age Brad Friedel doesn’t have an abundance of years left as a professional, therefore, signing a new goalkeeper is a must for Tottenham. In addition to this, Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes are not highly rated by the Portuguese manager and not good enough to claim the number 1 jersey.
Julio Cesar’s representative had previously stated that Tottenham are looking at the Inter Milan goalkeeper although, the Premier League clubs interest is not concrete. He was quoted as saying: “Now he remains at Inter, he doesn’t want to go to Brazil and the market has just closed there, some clubs indeed contacted us, but we asked them to contact Inter, the club that own his rights. There is nothing certain yet”. It seems that Julio Cesar’s future is up in the air currently but a resolution is expected soon. His representative also went on further to say “There are talks with Tottenham, but the English club has not yet made official steps.”
What Sort Of A Fee Will The Goalkeeper Command?
Due to the players age and contract length the San Siro club may decide to release the experienced Brazilian or accept a nominal fee making the player a viable option for several clubs. Although, it is unclear as to what sort of wages the Brazilian may desire, high wage demands could potentially put interest clubs off signing him.
I personally believe that the Brazilian keeper is most likely to join Roma as he has a good understanding of the Italian league, having played at Inter for 7 years. Serie A is a league he is comfortable in and at the age of 32 he may be unwilling to step out of his comfort zone to play in completely different surroundings and a different atmosphere. Moreover, I believe that Cesar is just one of several goalkeepers on Tottenham’s shortlist and they would prefer to go for a younger alternative, who can become an influential part of the Spurs starting 11 for many years to come.
One thing is for certain, on his day Julio Cesar is a world-class keeper and he needs to recapture his best form once again, away from Inter Milan.
