The PSG Project

Much has been said of late about Paris Saint Germain and the clubs Qatari owners. The French clubs wealthy Qatari owners have enabled manager, Carlo Ancelotti to entice some of the worlds best players to make a move to the French capital. The owners have backed Ancelotti with considerable transfer funds and with the club missing out on the Ligue 1 title last year they will be determined to pay what it takes in order to attain the prestigious trophy. Moreover, PSG are one of the most talked about clubs in world football at the moment because of their wealth, the clubs project and the international stars they have at the club. Some of the big name players the club can boast include: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Javier Pastore, Jeremy Menez and Nene. Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were both signed recently from Serie A giants AC Milan, this was a huge coup for Paris Saint Germain to be able to complete the double capture of two world-class talents. Both players joined the French club for a combined fee believed to be in the region of just under £50 million pounds. This is viewed as a price well worth paying for two world-class additions to the Paris Saint Germain squad.

So What Makes The Club So Attractive To Some Of The Worlds Best Players?

There are four major factors attracting footballers to join PSG:

  • The clubs financial resources, enabling the club to pay very good wages and high transfer fees if required.
  • A successful history with the likes of Ronaldinho and Pauleta both having played for the club in the past.
  •  A quality, experienced manager in Carlo Ancelotti who has experienced success both as a player and of course as a manager.
  • Finally, Paris is one of the worlds leading cities attracting people from all over the world each year because of the French capitals charm, fashion, luxury and art amongst other things. With footballers highly paid Paris is a great place for them to show of their wealth and splash the cash. The cosmopolitan city of Paris is a temptation many find hard to resist. PSG are looking to maximise the clubs location (Paris) as one of the worlds most iconic and attractive cities and become a real superpower.

It is also important to mention Carlo Ancelotti’s close relationship with the clubs Sporting Director, Leonardo. Both have managed AC Milan in the past, therefore they both have a good understanding of the Italian market. The recent signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva portray how they use their former links at AC Milan to the clubs advantage. Several of the clubs signings have come from Serie A further emphasising Ancelotti and Leonardo’s knowledge of the Italian market and what players would best suit the ongoing project at PSG.

Also, with Champions League football on the horizon next season these are exciting times for PSG fans. Expect Paris Saint Germain to further strengthen their squad significantly this summer. New defensive recruits are needed and the club may also want to increase quality in other areas of the team too.

Whilst, some may consider Manchester City and Chelsea as two of the worlds leading clubs when it comes to spending vast sums of money on players and paying very high wages in order to compete at the top, they will face strong competition from PSG. Following the recent signings of Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic the world stood up and took notice, PSG will have of course have wider ambitions than just winning Ligue 1 this season. The club will want to impress in the Champions League in the upcoming season too and show others why they are the team to look out for. The PSG project will infuriate the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City as they battle each for the signature of some of the worlds best footballers.

Clubs like PSG have a completely different approach to the likes of Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund who choose to build gradually benefitting the club greatly in the long-term, with a major focus on building an excellent youth system. Instead, the likes of PSG, Manchester City and Chelsea choose to spend vast sums of money on established football stars that will benefit the club in the short-term. In addition to this, with the money the club has spent and the huge talents they have already attracted to the club, PSG have shown a major statement of intent to the world, that they must be aware of the French clubs playing potential. Many people criticise this approach to spending and claim that money is ruining football and hindering a level playing field for all clubs. With talent comes large salaries with the clubs most significant new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic one of the worlds highest paid players in the world!

Consequently, it is important to consider how PSG had beaten off stiff competition from clubs like Chelsea in order to attract some of these big names. Chelsea were strongly interested in Javier Pastore, but the French clubs project was enough to convince him to reject the opportunity to join Chelsea Football Club last year.

With then new season fast approaching, teams everywhere will be looking to add a few more players in swiftly, in order for any new signings to get used to their new surroundings and take a part in their new clubs pre-season. Players will also be shown towards the exit door as managers look to shape their squads for the new season.

It is about time the club returned to its former glory days of old after such a long wait. And PSG are widely tipped to be one of the worlds most dominant forces in world football in the upcoming season. Will the huge investment pay off? Can PSG emerge as a major force in Europe? Only time will tell…
