Today the news we had all been waiting for was finally announced, Santi Cazorla has officially joined Arsenal. One of the worlds worst kept secrets had finally come to an end, as Arsenal confirmed the news everyone had been waiting for. It is a real statement of intent from Arsenal to sign an experienced spanish international who was regarded as one of the best players in La Liga, outside of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Arsene Wenger has been a keen admirer of the super Spaniard for a long time, with Arsenal reportedly interested in signing Santi as a replacement to Cesc Fabregas last summer, during the players days at Villareal. But it was Malaga who clinched the signing of Cazorla in a big money switch away from Villareal at the time.
Why Did Malaga Cash In On Their Best Player?
The current financial situation at the club has been well documented of late, with the club in severe debt and needing to raise funds something just had to budge. And it did. Two of the Spanish outfits star players in: Santi Cazorla and Salomon Rondon have now been sold in order to raise funds, but the departure of other big names at the Spanish club is also widely anticipated. The club still owe Villareal money for the Cazorla transfer last summer and with major debt enveloping the club it was vital that they did what they could in order to prevent the club from losing its UEFA License. Without selling such star names Malaga would not have been able to pay off their debts in time and face missing out on Champions League football next season and possibly even relegation depending the severe nature of the situation at the club. However, after selling these star names the club should now be able to pay off its debts and remain afloat.
How Much Did Arsenal Pay For Santi Cazorla?
It is believed that Arsenal paid a fee in the region of £16.5 million pounds for the hugely talented spanish playmaker. Although, Arsenal have declared the fee as undisclosed. This fee represents great value for money and offers Arsenal fans everywhere exactly what we have been crying out for. A marquee signing. A player aged 27 who has experienced many a big occasion, a Spanish international with a point to prove and a great desire to achieve. He has come to Arsenal to win trophies and the signs look promising for next season.
Why Did Cazorla Chose To Move To Arsenal?
Well, Santi Cazorla has revealed that former Gunners Robert Pires and Cesc Fabregas influenced his decision to join Arsenal. He also described how the opportunity to join Arsenal was simply too good and he had to take advantage of such a great opportunity. The former Malaga star told Arsenal player how he is happy to be at a huge club in Arsenal and how it is a major step forward in his career. He of course also declared how it is his ambitions to win trophies with the London giants. Arsenal have always had a long-term interest in the player, this was proven true when Cazorla had this to say: “I remember when I signed for Malaga [in 2011] there was already interest from Arsenal. It was always a club I liked very much.” Arsenal are well-known for identifying key transfer targets and taking their time before making their interested concrete. The majority of players at Arsenal were signed after many months of scouting and analysis something that has always proved to be a huge success for the club with a consistent place in the Champions League each season. Furthermore, Cazorla realises that this was his last opportunity to make a big step up in his career, he stated “I could not miss this opportunity – I am 27 years old so it was the last train I could catch.”
Santi Cazorla will join his new team-mates in Germany for our upcoming pre-season friendly against FC Cologne . Arsene Wenger, Arsenal fans and everyone connected to Arsenal Football Club will be eager to see how he and the rest of the Arsenal team does with the start of the new Premier League season looming every closer.
What Will Cazorla Offer Arsenal?
Santi Cazorla will inject some much-needed creativity into Arsenal’s midfield greatly missed since the departure of Cesc Fabregas. It is important that the midfield unit as a whole provides more assists and score more goals, with an over reliance on Robin Van Persie hugely evident last season. Cazorla will provide Arsenal with some much-needed goals and assists from midfield. His versatility is also a great strength of his with the midfielder able to play across the midfield. In addition to this, Cazorla also has a great long-range shot, in fact 8 out of the 9 goals he scored for Malaga last season came from outside the box. He has a tremendous free kick and is a specialist set piece taker. He keeps to ball well under pressure and has a keen eye for a killer pass. Consequently, he is also prepared to put his foot in and make a tackle for the team when required. He won the ball back from Malaga’s opposition last season 4.8 times per game, a greater statistic in comparison with the likes of: Ramsey, Walcott and Gervinho. The question is where will he play? A lot depends on the formation Arsene Wenger decides to go with. It is truly difficult to decide where exactly Wenger will start Cazorla in Arsenal’s midfield next season with Wilshere out and Podolski signed recently. Also, if Nuri Sahin does indeed join Arsenal on a season long loan deal Arsene will truly have a selection headache. Most importantly, Cazorla is a committed, determined individual who gives his all not matter what position he is playing in. Spanish football expert Sid Lowe, rates him very highly and named Cazorla La Liga signing of the summer and included the Spaniard in his La Liga Team of the Season. The honest truth is that without Cazorla Malaga would not have finished in a Champions League position last season, he was that influential. Arsenal have got a great player in Santi Cazorla, a marquee signing, a tremendous talent. Arsenal can compete with the very best on their day and the options are well and truly mouth-watering for a place in the starting 11.
La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have let this talent walk away from Spanish football without so much as a second glance. Their loss is a great gain to Arsenal and I am personally delighted that Arsenal Football Club have been able to pull this deal off. Arsenal can attract big name players, and you don’t need to pay the earth to do so! Arsenal’s conscious approach to spending has put the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea to shame.
If Arsenal can add one or two more players to the three quality players they have already signed in Podolski, Cazorla and Giroud we could well be in for a huge treat next season! But it is important that we sign a new defender and hold onto to our prized assets this summer. The future does indeed look bright at Arsenal FC next season.
Will Arsenal Finally End Their Trophy Drought Next Season?
Only time will tell…
