News reached us recently that Southampton had made an ambitious £11.5 million pound offer for Bologna star Gaston Ramirez. Gaston Ramirez and his agent were both happy with the wages offered to the Uruguayan from Southampton however, Bologna are demanding a higher fee at present.
Ramirez started his career off at Uruguayan side Penarol, he made 30 appearances and scored 6 times, before moving on to Bologna in 2010. Since then he has gone on to improve and develop into an outstanding talent, in his first season he ended the campaign with 7 goals and two assists in all competitions. He did even better in the last campaign scoring 8 goals from attacking midfield, along with 4 assists. It may not seem phenomenal but Ramirez has played in an average mid-table Bologna side and still manage to perform excellently.
I have been watching him for quite a bit now and have been very impressed with how he plays, he is very strong and physical, difficult to knock off the ball. Such traits would suit him perfectly for the rigors of the Barclays Premier League. He has superb ball control, his dribbling is terrific and he is full of tricks and skills. Ramirez also possesses a sacred left-foot, when he lines a shot up on his favourite left foot, it rarely misses the target. Powerful and precise, he can certainly can score goals from distance, especially set pieces, which he showed in the Olympics with his stunning free-kick against UAE in the first group stage fixture.
Many big clubs are interested in signing Ramirez, most notably Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City. Liverpool were strongly linked with a £20 Million move for the 21-year-old. Southampton are the latest club to firm up their interest in the talented South American.
It also marks a strong statement of intent from Southampton who are trying to punch above their weight in order to make this deal happen! They have already smashed their transfer record this summer, completing to signing of Jay Rodriguez for £7 million pounds from Burnley. If Southampton could once again smash their transfer record and sign Ramirez what a coup that would well and truly be! Southampton are a club on the up and striving towards success, vastly progressing, it seems crazy that not so long ago they were in administration. The player had praised Southampton likening them to his current club Bologna and a move to the Premier League is something that definitely interests the player. A summer transfer move would suit all parties, Bologna would receive a decent fee and may want to reinvest the funds they receive, whereas, Southampton would have captured a sublime talent, capable of producing some golden moments and Ramirez will be part of a very young side with a terrific manager in Nigel Adkins. It may take him some time to settle in the South Coast and adapt to life in the Premier League, but he sure is capable of setting the Premier League alight and if the move is on the cards, it is magnificent not only for Southampton but for the Premier League as a whole aswell.
