I have compiled a list of who I believe will be Serie A’s standout players over the course of the season.
5- Sebastien Giovinco, Juventus.
After a fantastic season on loan at Parma in 2011-12, Sebastian Giovinco has returned to Juventus with the ‘Old Lady’ expecting big things from the Italian. With 15 goals and 11 assists to his name last season, Giovinco has impressed many people including Italy coach Cesare Prandelli. His superb season earned him a place in Italy’s 23 man squad for Euro 2012, he played two games and helping Italy to the final which they of course lost to a strong Spain side. With regular playing time this season Giovinco is more than capable of surprising many people with strong performance, however, he is still young and his plenty years to develop further. Definitely a player to look out for this season.
4- Antonio Di Natale, Udinese.
At 35 years of age, Antonio Di Natale is always a stand out player in the Serie A season after season. His prolific goalscoring and fabulous finishing ensures that the Italian is a key figure for Udinese. Having scored 23 goals last season, Di Natale helped the Bianconeri to finish an impressive third place in Serie A, and many expect him to add to his impressive goal tally. Loyalty is Di Natale’s middle name (not literally), having turned down some of the top clubs in his career, the Italian plays with pride and for the shirt. Having had such a great career and even at the age of 35 I believe he will still be a massive part to play for Udinese in Serie A this season.
3- Wesley Sneijder, Inter Milan.
Wesley Sneijder is known as one of the top midfielders in the world, the Dutchman moved to Inter from Real Madrid in 2009 and has never looked back. In his three years at Inter so far, Sneijder has won an impressive amount of honours, including: Serie A, Coppa Italia(2) Supercoppa Italiana and the UEFA Champions League. The 28-year-old is a regular for club and country and has represented Netherlands a massive 90 times scoring 26 goals, with this experience, Wesley Sneijder will still have a big part to play for Inter Milan in Serie A this season.
2- Arturo Vidal, Juventus.
Arturo Vidal is a solid defensive midfielder who played a vital role in helping Juventus to an unbeaten Serie A campaign last season. The Chilean usually played in a three-man midfield alongside Italy legend Andrea Pirlo and the talented Claudio Marchisio which he states helped him significantly. The 25-year-old contributed seven-league goals and three assists, including crucial goals against Napoli and two against Roma. Vidal is a versatile box-to-box midfielder capable of playing in a more attacking role. I believe he will once again be key this season to any successes Juventus may have.
1- Edinson Cavani, Napoli.
Edinson Cavani played a pivotal role in Napoli’s side last season. The Uruguayan started the campaign scoring in the Champions League group stage against Manchester City, and just 4 days later scored an incredible hat-trick against AC Milan in a 3-1 home win. His strength, finishing and shooting ability has helped him become a regular for Uruguay and Napoli and scoring is not a problem for the 25-year-old. Cavani has scored 51 goals in 71 games since joining Napoli in 2010 and having turned down big money moves in the summer, I expect the ferocious forward to be the standout player in Serie A. If Napoli can hold onto their prized asset, Napoli fans may be in store for something special this season…
